Hydromechanical characterisation of a highly expansive clay

The hydromechanical properties of a South African expansive clay are reported. In this study,swell potential and swell pressure were assessed by two oedometric approaches, namely, the loading after wetting test test. data indicate that predictions from approaches remain similar, whereas greater heave obtained for approach. It is also observed magnitude predicted dependent on soaking stress considered, with being lower stresses. Measurements primary drying curves illustrate appreciable hysteresis in intermediate suction range (≈17 MPa). discrepancy finding previous study attributed to differences fabric. Additionally, when examining volumetric response sample subjected path, negligible void ratio plotted as function gravimetric water content. Conversely, shrinkage/swell terms suction, irreversibly changes apparent.
